{"id":2060,"date":"2012-09-17T08:24:54","date_gmt":"2012-09-17T07:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/t-machine.org\/?p=2060"},"modified":"2012-09-17T08:24:54","modified_gmt":"2012-09-17T07:24:54","slug":"the-real-cost-of-game-consoles-inflation-adjusted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/new.t-machine.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/17\/the-real-cost-of-game-consoles-inflation-adjusted\/","title":{"rendered":"The real cost of game-consoles (inflation-adjusted)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/news\/177337\/Sizing_up_Wii_Us_price_tag_against_history.php#.UFbKSHChw5J\">35 years of game-consoles, and their original retail price<\/a>, adjusted for inflation:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gamesetwatch.com\/console-prices-relative-2.png\"><\/p>\n<p>i.e. a (reasonably) direct comparison of how expensive they were at the time they were launched.<\/p>\n<p>Some quick observations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NeoGeo and 3DO\/Jaguar were insanely expensive &#8211; and, of course, sold very poorly and went bye-bye.\n<li>Until the Wii and the GameCube &#8230; Nintendo&#8217;s NES and SNES, and Sega&#8217;s Master System &#8211; the best-selling consoles of the goldern-era &#8211; were almost the cheapest ever launched.\n<ul>\n<li>(I&#8217;ve long argued that hardware price is one of the biggest factors in the sucess of a console, so I&#8217;m biased and cheering for this ;))\n<li>PlayStation 2, which kept up the immense sales trend of PS1, was slightly cheaper, following the curve down. PS3 bucked it &#8230; and sales were disappointing.\n<li>This chart lists *only* the launch price, it doesn&#8217;t say anything about the deep price drops over the consoles&#8217; lifetimes; &#8220;price&#8221; is the main thing a platform owner can change after launch (changing the hardware features \/ design is almost impossible)\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Found via reddit, but no link to that bad person, because they linked the image without credit \/ citation.
