{"id":1281,"date":"2011-02-15T22:49:30","date_gmt":"2011-02-15T21:49:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/t-machine.org\/?p=1281"},"modified":"2011-02-15T22:49:30","modified_gmt":"2011-02-15T21:49:30","slug":"social-games-are-evil-a-k-a-indie-marketing-301","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/new.t-machine.org\/index.php\/2011\/02\/15\/social-games-are-evil-a-k-a-indie-marketing-301\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Games are &#8220;evil&#8221; (a.k.a: Indie Marketing 301)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I reckon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/2011\/02\/15\/jonathan-blow-interview-social-game-designers-goal-is-to-degrade-the-players-quality-of-life\/\">this<\/a> is just a case of indie developers (finally) starting to<br \/>\nunderstand the concept of &#8220;marketing&#8221; in a bit more depth than the 101<br \/>\nstuff.<\/p>\n<p>With my PR hat on, this is great stuff: highly contentious (and<br \/>\npotentially dangerous) quotes &#8211; and yet, nowhere near as<br \/>\ncareer-damaging as <a href=\"http:\/\/n4g.com\/news\/28853\/spore-developer-chris-hecker-apologizes-for-calling-the-wii-a-andquot-piece-of-shitandquot\">declaring that a certain console is ****<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Evil&#8221; is emotive, but just vague enough that you can get away with it in ways<br \/>\nthat you can&#8217;t when you target billion-dollar brands. *ahem*.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d also add that &#8211; in true marketing style &#8211; this whole conversation<br \/>\nis about 6 months behind the curve. Which is about right for a<br \/>\nmass-market promotional piece &#8211; people at the coal face have moved on,<br \/>\nbut Joe Public is still intrigued and yet to catch-up. Anyone who<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfweekly.com\/2010-09-08\/news\/farmvillains\/\">still thinks Zynga is the company from &#8220;that SF Weekly article&#8221;<\/a> is<br \/>\nliving in dreamland.
